ra i vari siti archeologici vi è quello di Baalbek, uno dei più
importanti del vicino Oriente, patrimonio dell’Unesco dal
1984, situato a poche ore di macchina da Beirut, capitale
del Libano e principale centro bancario e assicurativo, oggi
considerata uno dei principali centri culturali di tutto il Medio
Oriente. La città fu in parte distrutta nel corso della guerra civile,
ma a partire dal 1992 iniziò un’opera di ricostruzione mai vista
prima, che portò a nuovo splendore l’antica città, donando agli
edifci uno stile più occidentale.
Balbeek ha conosciuto il suo maggior splendore fra il I e III
secolo, quando la città, allora chiamata “Heliopolis”, ospitava
un afascinante santuario dedicato a Giove. Le poche rovine
suggeriscono edifci giganteschi che diconomolto sulla ricchezza
della città risalente al I secolo d.C. Caratteristica del sito non è la
sua vastità bensì l’importante bagaglio storico e culturale che ha
saputo conservare nel corso dei secoli. Gli introiti legati al turismo
hanno cominciato a crescere dagli anni ’50 grazie al festival
di Balbeek, una grande manifestazione dove si susseguono
spettacoli teatrali, opere e concerti, il tutto organizzato nella
cornice del grande cortile. Interrotto nel 1975 a causa della guerra
civile libanese, gli spettacoli sono ritornati nel 1997.
A
mong the various archeological sites one fnds is Baalbek,
one of the most important sites in the Middle East. It
has been UNESCO patrimony since 1984 and is located
only a few hours by car from Beirut, Lebanese capital and
principal banking and insurance centre, today considered one
of the principal cultural centres of the Middle East. The city
was in part destroyed during the civil war. But starting in 1992,
a reconstruction project bigger than any before brought new
splendour to the ancient city, giving the edifces a more Western
style.
Baalbek witnessed its heyday between the Ist and 3rd centuries,
when the city, then known as “Heliopolis”, hosted a fascinating
sanctuary dedicated to Jupiter. The few ruins suggest gigantic
edifces that speak tomes about the riches of the city, dating back to
the frst century A.D. Characteristic of the site is not its vastness but
rather the important historical and cultural baggage it has preserved
over the centuries. The income linked to tourism has been growing
since the 50s, thanks to the Baalbek Festival, a great demonstration
where theatrical shows, operas and concerts abound, all organized
in the context of the grand courtyard. Interrupted in 1975 due to the
Lebanese civil war, they returned in 1997.
