’Hotel è il frutto della complessa opera di ristrutturazione, da
parte degli architetti Carlos Ferrater e Juan Trias de Bes, di un
edifcio razionalista degli anni Cinquanta costruito per il Banco
Hispano Americano. Ad accogliere l’ospite, al di là della maestosa
facciata in granito rosa, c’è un patio luminoso, impreziosito da una
decorazione geometrica che lo avvolge nel suo cammino verso la
lobby.
Il Mandarin Oriental, a pochi passi da alcuni edifici simbolo del
modernismocatalano, si presenta infatti comeun interessanteesempio
di interior design grazie all’intenso lavoro svolto da Patricia Urquiola.
Negli spazi comuni troviamo così il Bankers bar il cui soffitto è stato
realizzato adoperando le porte
corazzate delle antiche cassette di
sicurezza. Vetro. Estetica pura. Colori
soavi. Décor ricercato. Mobili differenti
appositamente pensati. Queste
invece le creazioni di Patricia Urquiola
per le camere e suite. Sul piano della
gastronomia la ricerca del centro
nevralgico conduce al ristorante
Moments: uno spazio più classico
diretto da Raül Balam figlio di Carme
Ruscalleda. Il bianco dell’artistica, e
grande, rete metallica che lo circonda
identifica subito il ristorante Blanc. Più
informale, invece, ilMimosanell’ampio
giardino interno.
Lapenombraconferisceunacertasuggestioneallapiscina interna
posta accanto alla Spa. La luce e la vista sulla città sono, al contrario,
i tratti dominanti per la piscina esterna. Si tratta di uno spazio per
l’ozio posto in cima all’edifcio che, idealmente, completa il percorso
ascendente iniziato attraversando la passerella sospesa: una sorta
di ponte levatoio che introduce al castello incantato del design e
dell’ospitalità di lusso frmatoMandarinOriental Barcelona.

he Hotel is the fruit of the complex remodelling
project of architect Carlos Ferrater and Juan Trias de
Bes in a 1950s rationalist edifce constructed for the
BancoHispanoAmericano. There towelcomeguests on the
other side of the majestic façade in pink granite is a bright
patio, enhanced by geometric decorations which envelop
themon their walk to the lobby.
The Mandarin Oriental, a short distance from a few
symbolic buildings of Catalan modernism, presents itself
as an interesting example of interior design, thanks to the
intensive work done by Patricia Urquiola. In the common
spaces we fnd then the Bankers bar, whose
ceilinga realisedusingthe reinforceddoorsof
theold securityboxes. Glass. Pure aesthetics.
Soft colours. Refned décor. Expressly
designed furniture. These are the creations
of Patricia Urquiola for the rooms and
suites. Regarding gastronomy, the search
for the nerve centre leads to the restaurant
Moments: a more classic space directed by
Raül Balam, son of Carme Ruscalleda. The
white of the artistic and grand metallic web
that surrounds it immediately identifes the
Blanc restaurant. More informal, instead, the
Mimosa in the spacious interior garden.
The shade confers a certain atmosphere
to the indoor swimming pool, set next to the
Spa. The light and the view of the city are, on the contrary,
the dominating traits for the exterior swimming pool. It is
a relaxation space located at the top of the building which,
ideally, completes the ascending route begun coming
across the suspended walkway: a sort of drawbridge
which leads to the enchanted castle of luxury design and
hospitality created by Mandarin Oriental Barcelona.
